Week 10 NFL Television Coverage
Before getting in to the week's football coverage, I wanted to pass along one other note of interest on the airwaves this week. Tuesday at 9:00 pm PBS "American Masters" will be premiering Jimi Hendrix - Hear My Train A Comin’, a documentary on the iconic guitar player that includes an abundance of previously unseen concert footage, home movies, and interviews with many people who knew him: band mates Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox; fellow musicians Paul McCartney and Steve Winwood; and three women that Hendrix knew. Thankfully one of Hendrix' managers had the foresight to record and film many of his performances, something that was not commonly done at the time, or as easy to do back then as it is today. Hendrix would have turned 70 this year, and it is amazing to think that all of his work that we know of is compressed into just a four year span before his untimely death. One of his sound engineers, Eddie Kramer, recorded a 1968 concert in Miami which is used in this show, and will be released this week on DVD, Blu-Ray, CD and vinyl.
Ratings news: Sunday's game between the Patriots and the Steelers was the second highest rated sporting event in the Boston television market since the NFL season began. The only sporting event with a higher rating was the final game of the MLB season, the World Series clinching Game 6 between the Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals at Fenway Park last Wednesday. The Pats game had a 40.3 rating in the Boston market, the team's highest rating of the season. While the Sox game was the area's highest rated sporting event, the series as a whole averaged a 39.6 rating, which was up slightly from the Red Sox’ 2007 win in the ALCS (38.7). Compared to the Red Sox’ previous World Series, this year’s rating dropped 22% from Red Sox-Rockies in 2007 (50.7) and 23% from the Red Sox-Cardinals in 2004 (51.3), both of which were four-game sweeps.
CBS gets the NFL doubleheader this week, with the primary late game shockingly featuring the Denver Broncos. At least this time it is a decent matchup, with the Broncos traveling to San Diego. Not only do we have no Patriots to root for this week, but we are also do not get to become temporary fans of whatever team the Jets are playing; they too are on a bye.
